Welcome to When Growth Stalls
Welcome to the When Growth Stalls blog. When we first began developing the research for my book, When Growth Stalls, things weren’t quite so nutty in the economy. But in the past several months we’re seeing daily reports of company after company announcing revenue declines.
We all know that the crazy global financial and economic crisis is the primary culprit, which is one of the “market tectonics” our research identified. Because of the depth of this economic crisis, even the best-run companies are victims. However, what many of these companies don’t yet realize is what their stalled growth may be doing to them internally. That’s what my research (and the book) is all about. I believe that when the economy begins to turn around in late 2009 (perhaps 2010, as some economists are predicting), not every company will pick up right where things left off. Many will be feeling the effects of the internal dynamics caused (or brought to light) by stalled growth, and for some it will become a destructive vicious cycle.
The best place to get the full story on those dynamics is the book. But since things keep changing so quickly in this environment, I’ll be posting my continuing thoughts and observations on this blog. It’s my hope that by providing some color commentary on the crazy game we’re all forced to play these days, I can help you and your company stay ahead of it.

Steve, love the book and the blog. Specifically regarding marketing, the unforuntate part about facing stalled growth and defending investment in activities that will help us emerge stronger than ever is that many of us haven’t done a good enough job proving the ROI on past marketing initiatives and being effective promoters of our own successes. We all would be wise to spend just a bit more time on ensuring that our organizations understand both the value of marketing as well as the effectiveness of the marketing team they have on staff. Just one thought…
